Ukraine Update – July 7, 2010

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010
From Joy: We have been busy meeting kids and interpreters since Sunday! The Lord has been pouring us out to be His hands and feet. We are praying that there will be nothing of us that the children see but only Him! The Lord has been teaching us all a lot of things since we arrived. We have done a disco, bon fire, and we will have a ball on Sunday. I am kind of happy that I was unable to send the message yesterday, because now I get to tell you about the morning we had. We met together as a team with some of our interpreters and a few Ukrainian friends to have a time of sharing, worshiping, and praying together... It was amazing, Chase did a great… Read More

It’s a Radical New Year!

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010
I'm not one for resolutions at the new year. I think when I set them I inevitably set myself up for failure. I can't (or choose not to) keep them. I don't handle failing well, so I do what I can to avoid even the possibility of that happening. With that said, I have decided this year to set one goal. I hope it will be easier to keep because I'm not alone in it. I'm going to commit to try radical living by participating in the Radical Experiment with my faith family. There's something about knowing I'm not the only one doing this that helps. We're reading through the Bible, praying… Read More

Merry Christmas to all!

Thursday, December 24th, 2009
Merry Christmas! What a wonderful time of year this is as we celebrate the birth of our Savior! My prayer is that you will enjoy the time with family and friends but even more that we will all take the time to remember the reason we celebrate and give thanks. What a mighty God we have!
As a quick reminder, we do not have any small groups or Sunday morning Bible studies until January 6th (for small groups) and January 10th (for Sunday morning Bible study). The Student Ministry staff wishes all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We love you!! Read More

Opportunties to Serve the World at Christmas

Monday, December 14th, 2009
This year, we have lined up a couple of opportunities for students to serve the world in East Lake at The Lovelady Center. They are listed below. Please contact Alanna if you are interested in helping. This is also a chance for you to get others in your family or small group involved with you!
Santa Store (for girls only) – Each year The Lovelady Center offers a store for mothers to “shop” for gifts for their children. These gifts are donated to the center. We will be purchasing gifts for teenagers this year with money raised by students during our change war (which,… Read More

The Long Awaited November 20th

Thursday, November 19th, 2009
Before I even begin, if you feel like I'm picking on you, I'm not. There is not a certain person I think about as I write this. However, I believe there are many of us (that's right, I include myself in this) that can probably relate on many levels to the thoughts I've had lately. For a while now there's been a lot of hype about November 20, 2009. You can find information about the significance of this date all over the internet, in teen magazines in any store, and you hear it in the conversations of teenage girls all over America. If you're still wondering what I'm talking about, it's the release of the second Twilight movie, New Moon. In less… Read More

Small Groups are starting!!!

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
It's time...to join a small group! You may wonder what this talk about small groups is all about. Well, I'm glad you asked because I'd love to tell you! We have small groups for all students in 6th grade through 12th grade, guys and girls...and they are starting this week! The purpose of small groups is to take a deeper look at the Word and what God teaches us. It is also a group where community is built, service is done, and life is shared. There are groups meeting throughout the week at various locations. There will also be Gatherings (1st Wednesday of each month for middle schoolers, 3rd Wednesday of each month for high schoolers) at the Student… Read More

We glorify Christ by making disciples of all nations

Monday, August 24th, 2009
We glorify Christ by making disciples of all nations.
So, the title is our mission statement here at Brook Hills. Over the last year we've been thinking and processing a lot about how this should look in our Student Ministry. As you probably know, we have recently made some transformations in an effort fulfill this mission.
In my own life, I've been thinking about this statement and wondering how it should affect me personally, outside of my "job" here at Brook Hills. I truly desire to glorify Christ with every facet of my life. As I've thought about this, there are two questions that continually fill my mind: 1) What is a disciple?… Read More

Building Relationships

Friday, August 21st, 2009
In recent days, I have come to realize some things about myself. One of those things is that I am not an extrovert. I love people, I am outgoing, but I don’t find my energy from being around groups of people. I require a certain amount of alone time to be at my best. That being said, after an incredibly full time in Beijing, a day that had been going on for about 36 hours, a delayed flight in Chicago, and 14 days surrounded by people (whom I came to love and care about), the last question I felt prepared to answer was “How was your trip?” The only way I could think to answer it at the moment was with the simple, non-descript answer, “It… Read More

Get In It.

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
So, it's Tuesday. At Brook Hills, that means 10:00 am Staff Meeting. This morning in our Staff Meeting Chris Nichols, our Executive Pastor, walked us through Psalm 119: 25-32. He read it from his Bible as the rest of us read along and then we walked slowly back through each verse. Chris is pretty adament about the fact that he doesn't use an NIV. He prefers the NASB (New American Standard) and, I do have to hand it to him that these verses in  the NASB were sweet. The intentionality is good stuff. So, here it is: 25: My soul cleaves to the dust; Revive me according to Your word. 26: I have told of my ways and You have answered me; Teach me Your… Read More
